1908 graduated History, and Philological Faculty, Moscow University.
From 1899 active in revol movement. Arrested and exiled to Eastern Siberia. 1911 — 17 worked for Gorky's journal “Letopis”’ also taught at Shanyavskiy People's University and on Prechistcnka Workers’ Courses.
1917 co-ed, periodical “Izvestiya Moskovskogo Soveta”. 1918 co-founder. Socialist (later Communist) Academy. From 1919 professor and dean, Social Sciences Faculty, 1921-1925 rector and 1925-1930 professor and dean, History and Philosophy Faculty, Moscow University.
1919-1929 also member, State Learned Council. 1921-1922 deputy chairman, Main Trade and Technical Training Committee. 1921-1923 chairman, High School Council, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics People's Commissariat of Education.
In 1920's, together with M.N. Pokrovskiy, founded and directed Institute of Red Professor, Institute of History, Russian Association of Social Sciences Research Institutes, Communist Academy, and Social of Marxist Historians. 1930-1935 secretary, 1942-1946 acad secretary. Department of History and Philosophy, 1942-1953 vice-president, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
1945-1948 chief ed, journal “Voprosy istorii”. 1946-1949 chairman, Commission for the History of Historiography. From 1956 chairman, French History Study Group.
Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Also headed Socialist Ideas Study Group. Founded and ran series Predshestvenniki nauchnogo sotsializma (The Precursors of Scientific Socialism).
Chief cd, 30-volume collection of Herzen’s works. 1928, 1933 and 1960 attended International Congress of Historical Sciences in Oslo, Warsaw and Stockholm. 1947 headed Soviet deleg at All-Indiana Sciences Congress.
1958 head, Soviet dcleg at Franco-Soviet historians conference, Paris. 1949-1950 member, International Peace Committee. 1949 and 1950 attended 1st and 2nd World Peace Congresses.
From 1947 Honorary dr of history, Delhi University. Specialized in history of socialist ideas. Founded new branches of historiography — history of socialist and Communist ideas.
In 1920's, together with M.N. Pokrovskiy, directed Social of Marxist Historians and campaigned against non-Marxist historians.
