First Soviet Lithuanian director at the Lithuanian Film Studio, which was set up in 1949. He directed his first film, Drowned, in 1956, while still a student. Moved to Mosfilm in the early 1970s.
Specializes in political subjects - mainly the establishment of Soviet rule in Lithuania, and World War II. Films include No One Wanted to Die, 1965, That Sweet Word Freedom, 1973, and The Accident, 1974.
