After finishing Haileybury College he went to Cassel and studied there at the same school (realschule Erste Ordnung) as Prinz Heinrich, brother of German Kaiser.
He was one of the earliest non-germans to serve only one year in army instead of usual three. He received certificate from Headmaster. Subsequently, he studied in Tours and other French towns.
Returning to China in 1882 he worked in Chinese Maritime Customs Service and served at numerous ports in North and South China.
