Educated locally, then became one of the first at the faculty of Agriculture in Khartoum in 1938, graduating in 1942.
After working on the White Nile schemes he was made the first Sudanese agricultural inspector for Khartoum Province. With a scholarship to Oxford University he spent 1951-2 studying agricultural economy then returned as an agricultural inspector in the northern Province.
At independence in 1956 he was appointed technical advisor to the new Minister of Agriculture and then promoted director of the Department of Agriculture, a post he held for 10 years. He became director of production on the Equatoria Schemes and a member of the Administrative Council of the Gezira Scheme.
On resigning froip the civil service in 1966, he joined the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation, staying with it until 1971. He became a director of the Economic Commission for Africa and worked in Addis Ababa. In October 1971 he joined the World Bank organisation but later that month was recalled to Khartoum for his government post, which he retained after the reshuffle on October 9, 1972.
Leading agronomist in the country whose expertise in agricultural research and planning has won him international esteem. As a technical advisor on agricultural projects he has helped to solve many problems, not only for the Sudan but throughout Africa. Before joining the government he served on several international organisations including the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation and the Economic Commission for Africa.
