Ambulance driver with French Army, 1915-1917 (received Croix de Guerre). Later with American Intelligence Department, Madrid. Lived in Paris, southern France and Tunis after the war.
Traveled in Spain with Ernest Hemingway.
Secured material for his paintings of bulls in Pamplona. Returned to the United States, 1930.
Paintings have been shown at all important national and international exhibitions in the United States, also Wildenstein Galleries, London, and Museum of Modern Art, Paris. Represented in Metropolitan Museum, Whitney Museum, Pennsylvania Academy Fine Arts, Addison Gallery of America Art (Andover, Massachusetts), Brooklyn Museum.
Also murals in several public buildings.
