Ordained in 1871, his first post was a curacy at Little Street Mary's, Cambridge. A multi-disciplinary scientist, he was elected a Fellow of Sidney Sussex in 1874, where he published "books on both doctrine and inorganic chemistry". He was later elected Dean of Sidney Sussex and in 1892 chosen to succeed George Wyndham Knight-Bruce as Bishop of Bloemfontein, a post he held until his death on 12 October 1899.
