(Excerpt from The Palatine Text of Plautus Our Mss. of Pl...)
Excerpt from The Palatine Text of Plautus Our Mss. of Plautus are, as is well known, divided into two families. The sole representative of the one is the famous fourth century Palimpsest in the Ambrosian Library at Milan, a Ms. written in Capitals. The other, comprising all the remaining Mss., which are, without exception, in minuscules and date from the tenth century onwards, is called the 'Palatine' family, because its two most important representatives belonged to the old Palatine Library. Some of the divergences of the 'Palatine' text from the text of the Ambrosian Palimpsest are divergences which are known to have existed between rival editions or 'recensions' of Plautus in the period of the early Empire (e.g. in Paulus' epitome of Festus mention is made of gravastellus, the 'Palatine' reading in Epid. 620, as well as of ravistellus, the reading of the Palimpsest). Our two families of Mss. are therefore generally supposed to embody two early rival 'recensions,' the 'Palatine' and the 'Ambrosian recensions,' as they have been called. The 'Ambrosian recension' we know, as far as it can now be known, from Studemund's Apograph of the Ambrosian Palimpsest (Berlin, 1889). The texts of the Mss. which exhibit the 'Palatine recension' have been made available to us in the very careful and accurate 'apparatus criticus' of the new Ritschl edition (completed in 1894). (Excerpt from The Ancient: Editions of Plautus It is not ...)
Excerpt from The Ancient: Editions of Plautus It is not until about the fourth century A.D. that we get a clear view of the text-tradition of Plautus. But we can tap the previous flow of tradition at two points, at the time of Varro and at the time of Verrius Flaccas, and get at least a glimpse, obscured unfortunately by the fragmentary condition in which the writings of these authors have survived. It will thus be convenient to assign two separate sections in this monograph, one to the Plautine citations of Varro, and another to those of Verrius Flaccus, before proceeding to that period to which our extant MSS. can be traced back, which is also, roughly speaking, the period of the grammarian Nonius Marcellus. For the earliest stage of all, the interval between Plautus and Varro, the information that can be gleaned is so scanty and at the same time (thanks to the work of Ritschl) so well known that it is unnecessary to give it anything more than a brief notice here. (Summary of Plautine Syntax will, I hope, be of use not me...)
Summary of Plautine Syntax will, I hope, be of use not merely to readers of Plautus, but to all who are interested in Latin Grammar. These Comedies are the earliest remains of Roman Literature, and they reveal to us the obscure beginnings of many a construction which is fully developed in classical Latin. For example, the classical use of the Supine, of qicominus and other words can be understood only with the help of Plautine Latin (see below, I, i). AS ummary cannot achieve completeness in cataloguing instances, in discussing doubtful readings or constructions, in pursuing minor details and occasional varieties. But some compensation for these omissions will be found in the bibliographical references; for ever since Ritschl brought the study of Plautus into fashion, there has been a steady stream of monographs on special points of Plautine Syntax. The Syntax of Terence and the early Latin Poets has been included as far as was practicable. For the Republican Prosewriters and I nscriptions, the student should consult the brief but useful account given by Altenburg in an offprint from Fleckeisen s Jahrbiicher der classischen Philologie (S uppl. XXIV), entitled de Sermone Pedestri I taloruni Vetustissimo, Leipzig (T eubner), 1898 ;and he will find some interesting parallels from the other ancient dialects of Italy in C. Buck s Grammar of Oscan and Umbrian (B oston, 1904). The only existing work which deals with Early Latin Syntax as a whole, Holtze Syntaxis priscorum scriptorum latinorum usque ad Terentium, Leipzig, 1861, was compiled at a time before the text of the early authors had been properly restored. Of the longpromised Historische Grammatik der lateinischen Sprache, edited by a group of German scholars, only the first volume (L eipzig, Teubner, 1903) has appeared as yet (see below, V, i). Where a recent monograph contains mention of earlier writings o (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
