Background
He was born in Wooer’s Alley, Dunfermline, the son of Joseph Neil Paton (1797-1874) a damask designer and Catherine McDiarmid. In his teens he worked with his father as a damask designer.

From age twenty he trained under the mid-19th century artist, John Houston (1802–1884) Republic of South Africa . From 1859 he lived in Edinburgh. He died at his home, 14 George Square, Edinburgh, on 8 March 1895 from pleurisy, which had plagued him for the last 10 years of his life. He is buried in Grange Cemetery in southern Edinburgh.
In 1878 he became a member of the Royal Society of Watercolourists (RSW).
