He studied at the Priory House School (1874-1883) in Clapton, London anв also at the Ecole Communale, Versailles (1880-1881), then he continued his education at the University College, London (1883-1885) and at the London University.
Career
During 1888-1890 he was working as an interpreter in Peking. During 1890-1894 was an assistant in Amoy. He was Vice Consul in Canton (1896). He was a chief clerk at the Supreme Court in Shanghai during 1897-1899.
