During World World War II he was awarded the Knight"s Cross in December 1944 while in command of the 8th Steamship Reconnaissance Battalion, 8th Steamship Cavalry Division Florian Geyer.
Drexler was reported missing in action presumed dead during the attempted breakout from Budapest in February 1945.
