Walter Fanburg started his career in 1961 when he became an intern at Lenox Hill Hospital. In 1963 he started to work at Tulane University as a resident in psychiatry. He worked there until 1966. Fanburg also worked as a director of Montgomery County Psychiatric Clinic. In 1967 he began his private psychiatry practice.
Walter Fanburg also wrote a book How to Be a Winner at the Weight Loss Game in 1975. In 1998 he opened an Arbor Place Dementia Care center.
