Walter Quintin was born on March 17, 1832 in Lanesville, Indiana, United States. The son of William and Sarah (Davis) Gresham.

Walter Quintin Gresham attended Indiana University in Bloomington.

Career

Walter Quintin Gresham was admitted to Indiana bar, 1854. Member Indiana Legislature, 1860. Served as division commander in General Blair’s corpus, United States army, before Atlanta, 1861. Commissioned brigadier general, 1863, brevetted major general, 1865.

Walter Quintin Gresham was the United States district judge for Indiana, 1869-1882. United States postmaster general, 1882-1884. Suggested as Republican candidate for presidency, did not receive nomination, 1884, 88. United States secretary of treasury, 1884. Walter Quintin Gresham was appointed circuit judge 7th United States Judicial District, 1884.

Walter Quintin Gresham broke with Republican Party over McKinley tariff. Offered nomination as Populist Party candidate for President United States, 1892. Supported Cleveland in 1892 election. Secretary of state under President Cleveland, 1893-1895. Advised against Hawaiian annexation treaty, settled Nicaraguan-British dispute and Allianca affair between United States and Spain.
