He studied at the University of Paris, apparently around 1160 when Gerard la Pucelle was teaching there.
He was an English ecclesiastic in the service of Henry II, by whom he was held in high regard and entrusted with many important missions. He was a distinguished courtier as well as a churchman of great learning, who traveled extensively and was acquainted with the great men of his time. His name was legendary and many works were ascribed to him.
Indubitably his is the De nugis curialium or Courtiers' Trifles, a charming miscellaneous collection in Latin of tales, oddities, and opinions on the court, on marriage, and on monastic orders and many other subjects. Apart from this, tradition has attributed to Map a large collection of verse in Latin, and the French versions of the Lancelot story and the Quest of the Holy Grail.
