He received an architectural training in the office of the late Addison Hutton. In 1890 he started practice under his own name, and during a long career executed commissions for varied types of public buildings in widely separated areas. Among these should be mentioned the Asylum for the Insane at Frankford, Pa., Cooper Hospital in Camden, N.J., and the Dennis Hotel at Atlantic City. For a number of years prior to his retirement Mr. Smedly maintained an office in the Stephen Girard Building, Philadelphia
