He began newspaper career as reporter of Chicago-American (1902), wire editor and assistant news editor of Associated Press (1904-1909), Chief of Mexico Bureau of Associated Press (1909-August 1914), covering Madero, Huerta and Carranza revolutions including ten days battle in streets of capital and occupation of Vera Cruz by United States Forces; Assignment in Italy, Switzerland and France (September-November 1914), Chief Petrograd Bureau of Associated Press (November 1914-December 1917).
He visited Russian Front in Poland and Galicia (1915-1916), covered fall of Romanoffs and subsequently Bolshevik Revolutions, the Chief Peking Bureau(1918). On detached service covering occupation of Vladivostok by Allied Forces and rise and fall of Koltchak Government (July 1918- December 1919). Resumed post in Peking (January 1920)
