Background
Yonge was the son of Sir John Yonge, 1st Baronet, of Colliton and his wife Elizabeth Strode, daughter of Sir William IV Strode (1562-1637) of Newnham and educated in Leyden and the Inner Temple.

He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1663. In 1667 he was elected Member of Parliament for Dartmouth and sat until his death in 1670. Yonge married Isabel Davie, daughter of John Davie of Creedy, Devon.
Their children included Walter (1653–1731), who succeeded him in the baronetcy.

In 1659 Yonge was elected Member of Parliament for Honiton and in 1660 for Lyme Regis in the Convention Parliament.
