Taught school in Kankakee and Kenilworth, Illinois, 1904-1907. Vice consul, Freiburg, Germany, 1907-1908, Kehl, February-July 1908. In charge commercial department, New Trier Tp High School, 1908-1912.

Consul at Stavanger, Norway, 1912-1914, Colombo, Ceylon, 1914-1919.

Assigned to Department of State, 1919-1922. Consul at Stockholm, Sweden, 1922-1925, Warsaw, Poland, 1925-1929, at Bremen, Germany, 1929-1936.

Became consul general, Stockholm Sweden, January 1936. Became consul general and 1st secretary of Legation, Tallinn, Estonia, February 1, 1937.

Retired from the United States Foreign Service after more than 30 years of service.

Appointed consultant in the Office of Economic Warfare, Washington, District of Columbia, 1943, Office of International Trade, Department of Commerce, from 1945.
