Appointed clerk to Tam bookie Agent, 1863. Clerk to Resident Magistrate, Queenstown, 1871. East London, 1874; appointed Officer in Charge, Tambookie Location, Glen Grey, 1874.
Magistrate with Dalasile, 1876. Served in Galeka War, 1877-1878, with rank of Captain. Commanded Tembu Levies and European Volunteers in attack on Stockwe Tyali, 1878 (medal and clasp).
Resident Magistrate, Engcobo, 1882. Chiet Magistrate, East Griqualand, 1885. In war of 1880 - 81 commanded European Volunteer Troops, Wodehouse Border Rovers, and took part in expedition to relieve Maclear.
Was promoted to rank of Commandant in Frost’s column, and served till close of war (medal and clasp). Member of Native Laws and Customs Commission, 1880-1882. Employed on 1907 special service relations with the Pondos, 1884.
With regard to the position of Kreli. 1885, and settlement of Umditshwa, negotiated treaty of 1886 with Umqikela. And with Major Sir H. G. Elliot negotiated annexation of Pondoland with Sigcau.
Sup. of Native Affairs, Cape Colony, 1897-1902. Served South Africa, 1900-1902 (despatches, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Queen’s medal). Served on S.A. Native Affairs Commission, 1904-1905.
Retired from Civil Service, 1907. Member of Legislative Assembly for Tembuland, 1908-1910. Served on S.A. National Convention as delegate from Cape Colony, 190S-9.
