Patricia. Was on geological survey of Yellowstone Park, 1883-1889. Discovered that colors of hot springs and geyser deposits are due to algae living in hot waters, and that the deposits are formed by algae life. Discovered Heath Gulch, Yellowstone Park, where clk, bears, et cetera, are killed by carbon dioxide gas of extinct hot spring.
Also made valuable discoveries while engaged in general geological exploration of Montana, 1889-1898, mapping over 10,000 square miles, the results appearing as geologic folios of Geological Survey of the United States.
In recent years devoted mainly to economic geology, visiting mining centers of the United States, Canada, Cuba, Hayti, Century, Central American and Mexico. First to publish theory of secondary enrichment of ore deposits, 1899.
