This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ...of a finger, and could only very feebly make acknowledgment of encouraging and endearing words. I certainly did not think that any good could come of sending at once, as of course we did, for the nearest vet. In response to the summons there presently arrived an old unkempt dishevelled man seemingly somewhat cracked, and seemingly also somewhat gone in liquor. But his art had become a second nature, and he clearly knew all that a man may know about cats. He had a HEREDITY 83 very pleasant voice, and Toots perked up a very little at hearing it. Then he proceeded secundum artem to stroke the cat, which far from resisting, actually purred in a weak way. Then this excellent practitioner proceeded to bandage up the now unresisting Toots comfortably, persuaded him to take a mouthful of milk and so left him. He seemed to have the belief held by many people that animals--or at least domestic animals--understand human speech; for it was not till we were out of Toots's hearing that he said he could not yet tell if any, and if so, how many bones were broken or badly bruised, but he had every confidence that he would pull the cat through. Shortly after his first visit we happened to meet the lady who had given Toots to us. Of course we told her what had happened, and she explained all that had seemed mysterious. Toots's mother had been seen to go through the same experience, but did not survive it. She, like him, as we were convinced while we listened, had sat on a narrow window-sill outside the window, regarding the world outside with wise meditation when suddenly a bird came swiftly towards her. As it actually passed her Nature overcame philosophy. She made a wild dart at it, overbalanced herself, and fell. It was a terrible great fall....
