Career

Enlisted as private in infantry, World War I. Commissioned captain Infantry, California National Guard, December 1920, major, 1921, colonel, 1922. Organized and commanded 160th Infantry.

Brig. general of the line, July, 1926. Commanded Long Beach, California Area, during earthquake, 1933. Major general, July 1937.

Commanded 9th Army Corps, Fort Lewis, summer 1940. Entered Federal Service March 1941, assigned command of 40th Division in training, Camp Merriam, California, relieved from commanded due to protracted illness, September 1941, retired from active list July, 1942. Major general Honorary Reserve, by order of secretary of army placed on A.U.S. retired list, grade major general, 1948.

Decorations: Victory Medal, over 25 years service medal. Medal of Merit; Pre-Pearl Harbor medal. American Defense Service Ribbon.
