LAWRENCE, Walter Roper was born on February 9, 1857 in Moreton Court, near Hereford. 6th son of George Lawrence, Justice of the Peace, Monmouthshire.
Studied at Cheltenham College. Balliol College, Oxford. Passed first in open competition Indian Civil Service, 1877.
Entered Bengal Civil Service, 1879. Was assistant Commissioner Thai, Kurram, Afghanistan, 1880 (medal). Political service Rajputana, 1881-1884.
Under - Secretary Punjab Government, 1884-1888G, and to Government of India, 1887-1889. Officiating Secretary to Government of India, 1889. Honourable Secretary to Countess of Dufferin’s Fund.
Settlement Commissioner Kashmir, 1889-1895. Private Secretary to Lord Curzon of Kedleston, Viceroy of India 1898- 1903. Chief of the staff of the Prince of Wales for the Indian Tour, 1905.
Member of Council of India, 1907-1909. Resigned, 1909. 1st Baronet., cartulary-register 1906; err. 190G.
