He was born in Chesterfield, Missouri, later moving and graduating from the Lincoln County R-IV High School.

He served as a Democrat in the Missouri House of Representatives. He received his bachelor"s degree in education from University of Missouri. He went on to become a high school teacher and coach for ten years.
In 1986, he was elected the Lincoln County Assessor.
He has also served on the Silex R-1 School Board. He has been recognized for his work by inclusion in Winfield, Missouri"s R-IV Wall of Fame and the Saint Charles County Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2002, winning reelection in 2004. In 2006 he ran for the Missouri Senate, losing to Scott Rupp.
