She spent her early years in Shanghai, China, and went to the United States in 1983. From 1995 she has a group of her own at National Institutes of Health. She is an American Association for the Advancement of Science fellow since 2012 and National Academy of Sciences member since 2013.
Her research mainly focuses on deoxyribonucleic acid mismatch repair, translesion synthesis, and V(Doctorate)J recombination.
