Werner Mark Linz was a German-American publisher who specialised in educational and international publishing in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East.


Linz, Werner Mark was born on April 6, 1935 in Cologne, Germany. Son of George A. and Catherine B. (Wegener) Linz. came to the United States, 1957, naturalized, 1976.


He studied humanities at the University of Frankfurt and continued his education in the United States.


Successively treasurer, marketing vice president, executive vice president Herder & Herder Public Company, New York City, 1958-1971. Public, general manager Herder division McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1971-1973. President, chief executive officer Seabury Press, New York City, 1973-1980.

Founder, chairman, Chief Executive Officer Continuum Public Company and Crossroad Public Company, 1980-1992. Chairman, Chief Executive Officer Continuum Public Group, 1992-2000. Co-founder, v. chairman Continuum International Public Group, London and New York City, since 2000.

Director American University Press, Cairo, since 1995. Adjunct professor marketing New York University, City University, Pace University.


  • He was the co-founder in 2000 of the Continuum International Publishing Group in London and New York. On returning to Cairo in 1995 he collaborated with Naguib Mahfouz to establish the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature, an annual literary prize for a work of fiction in Arabic, with the guarantee of translation and publication in English for the winner. Among his authors at the AUC Press were Naguib Mahfouz, the first Arabic writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, Ahmed Zewail, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, archaeologist Zahi Hawass and Pope Shenouda III, head of the Coptic Church.
