Washington High School.
He is a senior for the Panthers. At Washington, he was a high school teammate of Josh Oglesby (University of Iowa). Their senior year, Washpun, Oglesby, and the Washington Warriors advanced to the 2010 and 2011 Iowa High School State Tournament, losing in the quarter-finals both times.
Wes was selected to the First-Team 4A All-State team in 2011.
Washpun and Oglesby were also Amateur Athletic Union teammates on the Iowa Barnstormers basketball club, along with other future National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 players Seth Tuttle (Northern Iowa) and Jarrod Uthoff (Iowa). Turning down a recruiting offer from Iowa, he decided to attend the University of Tennessee.
He chose Tennessee because he developed a relationship with coach Cuonzo Martin. As a freshman, he averaged 0.9 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17 games.
Washpun transferred to Northern Iowa after the season to be closer to home, as well as to play again with former Amateur Athletic Union teammate Seth Tuttle.
He started his sophomore season at Northern Iowa under coach Ben Jacobson. In his junior season, he was moved to a sixth man role. “I told him, "Look, this isn"t something I expect you to like," and he said, "Good, because I don"t,"” Jacobson said.
