West May's professional life is associated with Theodore Goddard, a London law firm in which he worked as a partner. The practice began in 1902, when John Theodore Goddard, an English solicitor, founded his own firm in London. Goddard first practised from offices in Clement's Inn, close to the Law Courts, before the firm expanded.
The practice grew steadily through the twentieth century. Its expansion led to a move to Sergeant's Inn in the Temple area of London in 1917, and by 1946 the firm had eight partners. Wartime bombing destroyed its premises and most of its records, after which the firm relocated to New Court, directly behind the Law Courts.
The firm gained national prominence in 1936, when it acted for Wallis Simpson in her divorce proceedings. West May was admitted to the bar in England in 1965. He subsequently worked as a partner at this London firm, which merged with Addleshaw Booth & Co on 1 May 2003 to form Addleshaw Goddard.
