Weston J. Naef was born on January 8, 1942, in Gallup, New Mexico, United States.
Weston Naef earned a Bachelor of Arts from Claremont Men's College (now Claremont McKenna College) in California (1964) and a Master of Arts from Ohio State University, Columbus (1966). He studied at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island (1966-1969).
In 1980s Weston Naef was a curator of photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and was previously its assistant curator (starting in 1971) and a staff member in the department of prints and photographs (1970). He directed the art gallery at Wheaton (Massachusetts) College in 1969 and was a visiting scholar at the Boston Public Library in 1968.
