Tuskegee Institute

Van Cleve was the ninth head coach for the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers located in Tuskegee, Alabama and he held that position for nine seasons, from 1955 until 1963. His coaching record at Tuskegee was 42 wins, 35 losses, and 5 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him fifth at Tuskegee in total wins and 11th at Tuskegee in winning percentage (543).

Alabama State

Van Cleve became the 15th head coach at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama starting the 1964 season, and he remained there for the next five seasons.

Hampton

Van Cleve ended his coaching career as the 13th head coach at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.
