Not illustrated. 1880 edition. Excerpt: ...alone he would grow weary during these years. And Froebel, knowing the wants of change-loving childhood, has provided plays which have the attraction of colour added to them. THE SEVENTH GIFT. " Quadrangular and triangular tablets for laying figures." Some of these being painted bright scarlet and others brown, they form a pleasing variety. This gift is to be introduced with the four preceding gifts. Upon examination of the material, its connection with those gifts will readily be seen; for instance, the box of quadrangular tablets, as being like the sides of the cube, would be most properly introduced with the third gift, which is composed of the eight small cubes. In the "Paradise of Childhood" there are given, for the seventh gift, patterns for making,--"Forms of Life".... 50 "Forms of Beauty".... 138 "Forms of Knowledge "... 105 This gift gives exercise to the instinct of activity, the instinct of invention and imitation, and the rhythmic instinct. In the chain of experiences, this gift, representing surface, is one link removed from the idea of a solid, advancing towards the idea of a point, represented by a dot. The next link in the chain would be a line; this is represented in THE EIGHTH GIFT. " The staffs or wands for laying figures." With this gift, forms of life, beauty, and knowledge may be made. Patterns are given for 128 forms of life alone. The line is also represented by THE NINTH GIFT. "Whole and half rings for laying figures." Curved lines make the variation in this gift from the one preceding it. The idea of the line is continued in THE TENTH GIFT. " Drawing." The instinct of imitation now receives much intensified exercise. The materials are, first,...

Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...it is religious. Of course it is no objection, but, on the contrary, is a high recommendation, to a legislative enactment, based on justice or public policy, that is found to coincide with the precepts of a pure religion; but the fact is nevertheless true that the power to make the law rests in the legislative control over things temporal, and not over things spiritual. Thus the statute upon.which the defendant relies, prohibiting common labor on the Sabbath,.could not stand for a moment as a law of this State if its sole foundation was the Christian duty of keeping that day holy and its sole motive to enforce the observance of that duty. For no power over things merely spiritual has ever been delegated to the Government, while any preference of one religion over another which the statute would give upon the above hypothesis is directly prohibited by the Constitution. Acts evil in their nature, or dangerous to the public welfare, may be forbidden and punished, though sanctioned by one religion and prohibited by another; but this creates no preference whatever, for they would be equally forbidden and punished if all religions permitted them. Thus, no plea of his religion could shield a murderer, ravisher or bigamist; for the community would be at the mercy of superstition if such crimes as these could be permitted with impunity because sanctioned by some religious delusion. We are, then, to regard the statute under consideration as a mere municipal or police regulation, whose validity is neither strengthened nor weakened by the fact that the day of rest it enjoins is the Sabbath day. Wisdom requires that men should refrain from labor at least one day in seven, and the advantages of having the day of rest fixed, and so fixed as to happen...

Princeton, February 15, 1895. My Dear Mr. Crafts :T he Faculty of the Seminary have wished me to express to you their appreciation of the lectures on Social Problems which you delivered to the students last week, and their thanks to you for the course. We recognize the wide study which you have given to these subjects, and the large number of valuable facts which you have collected. We recognize also in your treatment of the facts the caution and the desire to be fair and thorough which are necessary for a proper discussion of such practical and important topics. You seem to us bent on apprehending the whole truth and in doing justice to all sides of each case. We are especially gratified by your presentation of the idea that religion as well as economic science has a part to do in the solution of social problems, and we Relieve that our students will be better prepared by your lectures to exert the proper influence in social and civil relations which is possible to ministers of the Gospel. We congratulate you heartily on the ability you showed in the preparation of your lectures, and feel sure that you have done a niost useful work in delivering them before the Seminary. Please accept our thanks. Very sincerely yours, George T. Purves. Princeton, February 18, 1895. Rev. Mr. Crafts :D ear Sir :I wish to say to you how highly I, in common with my colleagues and your auditors generally, appreciated the brief course of lectures which you have delivered at the Seminary on sociology. The practical acquaintance which you manifested with the numerous and complicated questions arising under this theme surprised and delighted me. The wise reserve shown in avoiding hasty and inconsiderate judgments upon matters that require further investigation, and the impartial attitude taken in regard to matters which have led to serious strife and agitation, cannot be too highly (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

(Excerpt from Through the Eye to the Heart: Or Eye-Teachin...)
Excerpt from Through the Eye to the Heart: Or Eye-Teaching in the Sunday-School This volume on the power and method of "Eye-teaching," which I am requested to "introduce to the Sunday-school public," needs no words of explanation or compliment. Its pages speak for themselves. The book is a defense of a most ancient method of teaching - so old that we cannot recall the time when men who thought and taught at all did not employ it. We find it in Eden, when God gave man his first command; at Sinai, when Moses taught God's chosen people both law and gospel by complicated and impressive symbols; in Israel, by the Hiddekel, and in Babylon, when holy prophets gave forth burning words from the invisible God; in Galilee and in Judea, when He who spake as never man spake taught the thronging multitudes the love and power and sweetness that were to be found in his own divine Gospel. Prophets, priests, apostles, philosophers, reformers, and teachers of all ages and of every nation, have used it. To-day, in the primary school, the academy, college, on the popular rostrum, and in every court of justice, it is continually employed. This book is more than a defense. It is a guide-book to all the practical details of the art. If the author errs at all it is in the excess of examples which he furnishes. He illustrates the whole field of illustration. One is left in no doubt as to what he means by a principle or a definition. He also exposes many of the mistakes which enthusiasts in chalk have made, reminding the teacher that things thoroughly good may be sadly abused. Let not those who use "Through the Eye to the Heart" forget that after all it is the Spirit, and not alone the truth, that is to reach and regenerate and enrich the heart. The clear apprehension of truth does not necessarily bring the affections and the life into harmony with the truth. For this interior and divine and most essential work we stand in daily need, both as teachers and pupils, of the "Holy Ghost sent down from heaven." For this gift - for this Teacher who shall "teach us all things" - let us look with the faith that is the "evidence of things not seen."
