Smith played college football at DePauw University and attended Huntington High School in Huntington, Indiana. Smith compiled a 1926 All-Pro Team consisting of players from the National Football League and the American Football League for the Chicago Tribune.

He was a member of the Chicago Cardinals team that were NFL champions in 1925.
