He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy for his research into the linguistic registers of Scottish Gaelic in 2002 and published two books based on the first ever tagged speech corpus of Scottish Gaelic.

He subsequently taught Gaelic and music at the Benbecula campus of Lews Castle College. He is currently working as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.
