Thompson, Will L. was born on November 7, 1847 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Josiah Thompson.

Education

Educated public school, East Liverpool, O. Musical education Boston Music school and Boston Conservatory of Music, 1870-1875. Graduate Leipzig Conservatory.

Career

Song writer, since 1870. Author: Thompson’s Class and Concert, 1890. Thompson’s Popular Anthems, 1895, 2d volunteer, 1901.

Also about 100 popular songs, such as “Gathering Shells on the Sea Shore,” “Drifting with the Tide,” “Come Where the Lilies Bloom,” “Moonlight Will Come Again.” Contributor to almost every hymnal and gospel song collection published in America. His “Softly and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling” has been published in hymnals throughout the world. Compiled and published New Century Hymnal, 1905, volunteer 2, 1906.
