Practiced law in association with Elihu Root. 1869-1883; justice Supreme Court of the New York, 2d Judicial Department, 1884-1906. Justice general term New York City, 1887-1889.

Justice Appellate div. Supreme Court, Brooklyn, 1896-1906. Associate judge Court of Appeals.

January 1, 1906-1914. Chief judge Court of Appeals, 1914-1916, when retired by age and became official referee in state cases. Resumed practice of law as counsel In association with Elihu Root, January, 1917.
