Educated Roxbury Latin school and Massachusetts Institute Technology.

Career

Opened Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, Milton, Massachusetts, as observer in charge, 1885. Joined staff of the Observatory of Harvard University, 1886. Assistant in Observatory Harvard, 1892-1913.

Assistant professor mechanic engineering, Harvard University, 1913-1938, emeritus, 1938. Consulting engineer since 1902.

Works

  • Author of the Telegraphic Cipher Code in international use for dissemination of astronomical information.
