Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

(It is the boast of the A nglo-catholics that their system...)
It is the boast of the A nglo-catholics that their system will fully abide the test by which the Monk of St Lerins has proposed that the true (J hristian faith should be discriminated from heretical corruptions of it, viz., that it is that quod ubi iue, quod semper, quod ab omnibus creditum est. It is the design of this book, on the other hand, to show that to part, at least, of this boast their system is not en titled that it has not always been received by all true Christians but, that especially in the earliest (J ays of the church, when under the infallible guid ance of the apostles, it was as a system either wholly unknown, or, so far as known, repudiated and con demned. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Ralph Wardlaw, D.D I issue this volume with feelings that lead me to say most una?'ectedly, Would it were worthier! Most gratefully, at the same time, would I acknow ledge the grace which has sustained me under the accu mulated labours amidst which I have had to compose it; and now that the work is done, I sincerely thank those who urged me to undertake it, and who have thereby privileged me to unite my name with that of one of the best men and greatest theologians of the nineteenth century. Excerpt from The Connexion and Harmony of the Old and New Testament: Being an Inquiry Into the Relation, Literary and Doctrinal, in Which These Two Parts of the Sacred Volume Stand to Each Other Desirous of consulting the interests of all classes of readers, I have abstained, as much as possible, from all exegetical disquisition in the text, and have placed such philological remarks as seemed necessary for the elucidation of the passages quoted in notes. For the same reason, I have rendered into English the quotations from ancient or foreign authors which I have had occasion to introduce; judging it not only more useful, but, upon the whole, more scholarly, to do so, than to load my pages with masses of Greek, Latin, and German, which two-thirds, perhaps, of my readers could not understand, and which no one would, in such a case, have had any security that I understood myself. dramatist secretary of state poet
Alexander, Sir William, 16t earl of Stirling Alexander, Sir William, 16t earl of Stirling.
Alexander was born at Menstrie in Clackmannanshire.
He was educated at the universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh, where he gained a lasting reputation for classical scholarship.
He entered Glasgow Theological Academy under Ralph Wardlaw in September 1827, but in December of the same year he left to become classical tutor at the Blackburn Theological Academy (afterwards the Lancashire Independent College).
After short visits to Germany and London he was invited in November 1834 to become minister of North College Street church (afterwards Argyle Square), Edinburgh, an independent church which had arisen out of the evangelical movement associated with the Haldanes.
In 1840 he delivered the Congregational Lecture in London on the " Connexion and Harmony of the Old and New Testaments.
"Alexander took an active part in the " voluntary " controversy which ended in the Disruption, but he also maintained broad and catholic views of the spiritual relations between different sections of the Christian church.
In 1861 he undertook the editorship of the third edition of Kitto's Biblical Encyclopaedia with the understanding that the whole work should be thoroughly revised and brought up to date.
He died at Pinkieburn House in Musselburgh and is buried nearby in Inveresk Churchyard.
In 1854 Alexander became Professor of Theology at Edinburgh University (and Principal of the Edinburgh Theological Hall from 1877), a position which he held until 1881, in spite of many alternative offers.
In 1867 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His address is then given as Pinkie Burn in Musselburgh.
He served as its Vice President 1873-8 and 1880-4.
