Until the 1940's New Zealand was dependent on shipping for its links with the outside world. Its trade and people moved by sea alone. Foremost in providing those links was the country's major commercial enterprise, the Union Steam Ship Company, second only in size and importance to the Government itself. The Union Company's part in the development of South Pacific commerce is brought to life in this book through the action-packed careers of one of its best known and colourful captains, Arthur Davey, and its flagship of the 1930's the Awatea. Davey was the Union Company's speerhead in responding to the challenge of the American Matson ships in the 1930's. In the Awatea he was at last given the means to do so. Complete with all the latest nautical equipment, the Awatea was the fastest and most luxurious merchant ship in the southern hemisphere. The ship and the man proved an ideal combination, setting standards of time-keeping never achieved on the Tasman before or since. The thrill of the Awatea's rivalry with Matson ships is captured vividly in these pages which record the lives of a master and a ship who together wrote an indelible chapter in the maritime history of the South Pacific.
