Studied at rudiments at a country school.
Principal knowledge gained in a large mercantile business, in which he ascended every rung of the ladder till he became manager. For many years carried on a firm of his own on merchant lines. During this time he was elected Mayor of Durban five times.
He was also elected a Member of the old Legislative Council. Ten years ago he retired to farm life. In 1893 was nominated to the Upper House, under the new Government.
