Beginning as an architectural draftsman, he worked for a time with the firm of Herter Brothers, afterward established an office under the firm name of Bates & How, and for a number of years during the early part of the century specialized in suburban residential work. For a large clientele Mr. Bates designed residences of varied types built in the greater New York area, and also at Bronxville where he had his own home. He was also architect for the Hotel Gramaton, Gramaton Court and other apartment buildings in Bronxville, as well as the Country Club at Ridgefield, Connecticut.
