Publisher's original dark green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and ruled in blind on the front and rear covers, original black clay-coated endpapers, thick lg 8vo. Bateson was a strong support of Mendel's discoveries and played a significant role in the re-discovery of Mendel experiments on pea plants. According to Garrison and Morton (237): "Bateson was convinced that discontinuity was the more important type of variation among animals and plants in some unknown way apart of their nature and not directly dependent upon natural selection at all. He argued that Darwin's concept of variation needed modification." Small bookplate of former owner on the front endpaper.
