He took office in 2010. Bell previously held the office on an interim basis in 1999. Bell was elected following a run-off with Patrick Cooper.

He is a Democrat.

Bell served several terms on the Birmingham City Council. On December 15, 2015, Bell and city councilor Marcus Lundy were involved in a physical altercation with one another.

Achievements

• Bell won the run-off with 53.6% to Cooper"s 46.4%.

Membership

In 1985, he became the first African-American to serve as President of the Birmingham City Council, having been elected to that position by the members of the council.
