Served with 49th Regiment and on Staff throughout Crimean campaign, 1854-1856 (medal three clasps, Turkish War Medal, Legion of Honour, Medjidie, despatches, B.-Major).
Deputy-Adjutant-General throughout Kaffir War, 1877 - 78. In command of combined Forces on East. Frontier during Gaika Rebellion (several times despatches).
Throughout Zulu campaign, 1879 (medal with clasp and dis- 144 tinguished service reward). Colonel on Staff, Natal and Transvaal, 18S0.
Administrator of Natal, 1880.
Member of Legislative Council and of Assembly, Transvaal, 1880-1881. Brigade-General commanding the Forces throughout defence of the Transvaal garrisons and three months’ siege of Pretoria. Sometime Administrator of Transvaal.
Colonel of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, 1902.
Transferred to R. Berkshire, 1905. Has also acted on Army Staff and in Civil positions in West Indies, Ireland, Canada, and Gibraltar. Cartulary-register 1882.
