BLACKWOOD, William was born on July 13, 1830 in Lucknow, India. Son of Major William Blackwood, Honourable East India Company’s Service, 59th Native Infantry, and publisher (d. 1861), and Emma, daughter of Brigadier - General George Moore, Honourable East India Company’s Service.
Grandson of William Blackwood, founder of the Publishing House of William Blackwood & Sons, Edinburgh and London.
Education
Studied at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh University. Studied in Paris at the College de Sorbonne, and at the University of Heidelberg.
Career
Entered the publishing business under his father and uncle John Blackwood, 1857. Editor of Blackwood’s Magazine; publisher and printer.
