From 1850 to 1852, he took part in the California Gold Rush. In 1866, he moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota. Bonniwell"s son, H. H. Bonniwell, also served in the Senate.
A Democrat, Bonniwell was affiliated with the War Democrats during his tenure in the Assembly.
Membership
Bonniwell was a member of the Assembly from 1864 to 1865. He was later a member of the Senate in 1871 and again from 1878 to 1882 and of the House of Representatives in 1877.
