Boyd began his architectural study at the University of Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania, United States and was graduated with a degree of the Bachelor of Science.
Boyd supplemented his training in draftsmanship while employed in offices of local architects. In 1911 he launched a professional career under the firm name of Ingham & Boyd, and during the years that followed was actively engaged in a wide and successful practice. The scope of his work included schools, churches and a number of both public and private buildings in Pittsburgh, notable examples of which were: Waverly Presbyterian Church, Historical Society Building, 1913, Henry C. Frick Training School for Teachers, Gymnasium and Dining Hall at the Shady Side Academy, Buhl Planetarium, and the Buhl Foundation Housing Development. The firm also designed a number of High Schools built throughout the State.
William married to Catherine McCutcheon on January 6, 1914. They had three children: William, Elizabeth Collier.
