Background

Bradford, William was born on September 14, 1755 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of William and Rachel (Budd) Bradford.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Princeton, 1772, A.M., 1775. Studied law under Edward Shippen.

Career

Served from private to colonel, Continental Army, 1776-1779, served at Valley Forge, White Plains, Fredericksborough and Raritan. Admitted to Pennsylvania bar, practiced in Yorktown, Pennsylvania. Attorney general of Pennsylvania, 1780-1791.

Justice Pennsylvania Supreme Court, 1791-1794. 2d attorney general United States under President George Washington, 1794-1795. On intimate terms with Washington circle (so-called “Republican Court”).

Indirectly responsible for Pennsylvania Senate removing capitol punishment (except for 1st degree murder) from statute books.
