Brymner was born on December 14, 1855, in Greenock, Scotland, United Kingdom. Son of Jean Thomson and Douglas Brymner.
In 1878 he commenced five years' study at the Académie Julien, Paris, under Adolphe William Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury.
Brymner was director of advanced classes at the Art Institute of Montreal from 1886 until 1921. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1886, to its vice-presidency in 1907, and was its president from 1909 to 1917. In the National Gallery, Ottawa, are his Dolly at the Sabot Maker's, Early Moonrise in September, Evening, Fog on the Coast, Nude, and A Wreath of Flowers. Brymner's influence upon all Canadian painting was great. He died at Wallasey, England, June 18, 1925.
