William C. Bunce was born in 1883.
Largely self-educated, his early training in draftsmanship was acquired while employed with architectural firms in Detroit, in the meantime pursuing a course of study in the International Correspondence School. Later he successfully passed the entrance examination to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
In 1921 Mr. Bunce joined the drafting staff of the Kahn office, and after serving as head draftsman for a number of years was promoted successively to positions of higher importance. He was closely associated with Mr. Kahn at the time of the latter s death in 1942, and assumed added responsibilities in the two remaining years of his own life. A modest man, few people outside the office realized that "Billy” Bunce played a major role in planning the new metropolis that was emerging from old Detroit. He was also identified with huge newspaper plants at Hartford, Conn., and many large war projects.
