Burger described 104 plant species, primarily in the Lauraceae and Moraceae. Burger received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1953, an Master of Science from Cornell University in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy from Washington University in 1961. He served as Chair of the Botany Department at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago from 1978-1985 and remains Curator Emeritus of Vascular Plants.
