Background

Burt, William was born on October 23, 1852 in Padstow, Cornwall, England. Son of William and Mary Ann (Hellyar) Burt.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Wesleyan University, 1879. Graduate Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey, 1881. Doctor of Divinity, Grant U., 1888, Wesleyan, 1902, Doctor of Laws, 1909.

S.T.D., Dickinson, 1913. Doctor of Humane Letters, Syracuse, 1913.

Career

Entered New York East Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, 1881, pastor St. Paul’s Church, Brooklyn, 1881-1883, De Kalb Avenue Church, Brooklyn, 1883-1886. Transferred to Italy Conference, 1886, and made presiding elder Milan District. Moved to Florence, 1888, and to Rome, 1890, remaining there 14 years in charge of chs. and schools of Italy.

Built several chs., founded a public house, organized a boys’ college, a young ladies’ college and other schools. Elected bishop of Methodist Episcopal Church by General Conference at Los Angeles, 1904, and consecrated, 1904. Resident bishop Methodist Episcopal Church in Europe, 1904-1912.

Resident bishop at Buffalo, New York, 1912-1924 (retired).
